HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (7-13) fell to the San Diego Toreros (14-7) 6-1 at Les Murakami Stadium Tuesday.
Joshua Schneider (2-1) took the loss while Josh Romanski (3-0) got the win for USD.
Jeffrey Van Doornum led the way for UH, going 2-for-4. Sean Montplaisir added a 1-for-2 game with a walk and a run while Jonathan Hee went 1-for-3 with a walk.
The Toreros jumped out early, scoring six runs in the first inning. USD was aided by two costly UH errors as three of the runs were unearned.
But the Rainbow pitchers responded after the first inning. Six pitchers pitched the rest of the game, allowing no runs the rest of the way. Josh Slaats pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, followed by 2.0 one-hit innnigs by Alex Capaul and Cory Kahn. Capaul added three strikeouts before Jayson Kramer (1.0 inn, two hits), Cameron Wheeler (0.2 innings, one hit, one walk) and Sam Spangler (0.1 inn) closed out the game for the 'Bows.
UH had a couple chances offensively before finally breaking through in the sixth. Montplaisir led off the inning with a walk before a single by Hee and a walk by Nathan Young loaded the bases. Vinnie Catricala was able to bring in a run on a fielder's choice, but the Rainbows left the inning with just one run, stopping the threat at 6-1.
Hawai`i also showed promise in the eighth as the first two batters, Montplaisir and Hee, reached base. But AJ Griffin came in for USD and shut down the Rainbows, recording three-straight strikeouts looking to hold UH off the board.
Kevin Macdonald singled in the ninth and it looked like UH would be able to start up a rally. But Landon Hernandez hit a ground ball to the right side that was fielded by USD secondbaseman Kevin Hansen, who got up and was able throw out Hernandez to end the game.
The Rainbows will now start conference play with a four-game series vs. Fresno State starting Thursday, March 20, at 6:35 p.m.
