IRVINE, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (7-11) dropped another game to the No. 8 UC Irvine Anteaters (13-1) 14-3 in the first game of a doubleheader at Anteater Ballpark Saturday.
Matthew Daly (3-2) took the loss for UH while Bryce Stowell (3-0) got the win for UCI.
Nathan Young led the way for UH, going 2-for-3 with a run, one RBI and a triple. Jeffrey Van Doornum went 2-for-2 with a run and a double while Derek DuPree had a triple and a run.
Controversy struck early in the game when Greg Garcia fielded a ball with two outs in the bottom of the first and threw over to first. The throw was off the base and Kevin Macdonald caught the ball off the bag, but appeared to tag the UCI runner. First base umpire Phil Detro then appeared to call the runner out and the Rainbow fielders started to run off the field. But the call was changed, leaving runners on the corners with two outs. Francis Larson, the next Anteater batter, then hit a double to deep centerfield, giving UCI two unearned runs and a 2-0 edge.
The Anteaters rode that momentum into the second inning, putting up two runs on two triples and a double to get their lead to 4-0.
UCI would then run away with it in the fifth and sixth innings, posting a combined eight runs in the two innings to get their lead to 12-0.
Young would drive in UH's first run of the series in the seventh inning with his first base hit of the season, a line drive up the middle, bringing in Van Doornum. The Anteaters added a run in the bottom of the seventh. Macdonald would then drive in DuPree for the 'Bows in the eighth, getting the score to 13-2.
Ollie Linton hit a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the eighth to get it to 14-2. Young would then score on a sacrifice after hitting a triple in the ninth, making the final score 14-3.
The second game of doubleheader is set to start at 4:40 p.m.
