No. 16 Hawai`i Defeats Maine, 6-3

HONOLULU - The 16th-ranked Hawai`i softball team (20-6) took an early 6-0 lead and never looked back as the 'Bows downed Maine, 6-3. It was UH's 20th win of the season, and pitcher Kate Robinson's eighth victory of 2008.

Robinson earned the win, throwing 5.1 innings, giving up three runs on four hits with five strike outs and no walks. Jessica Morton then came in relieve to earn her second save of the year, holding Maine scoreless for the final 1.2 innings. She gave up two hits and had one strike out.

Hawai`i's Melissa Gonzalez went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored; Robinson was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI; and Clare Warwick was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Both Warwick and Valana Manuma had singles that drove in two runs a piece.

Hawai`i led 6-0 through the first five complete innings, but the Black Bears roared back, cutting the lead in half by scoring three in the top of the sixth on back-to-back home runs by Alexis Soulharis and Ashley Waters.

This game against Maine was not part of the Chevron Spring Fling Tournament schedule.

UH continues it's play in the tourney tomorrow when they take on Texas Tech of the Big 12 at 4:00 pm and North Carolina of the ACC at 6:00 pm.
