IRVINE, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (7-10) fell to the No. 8 UC Irvine Anteaters (12-1) 9-0 at Anteater Ballpark Friday.
Jared Alexander (2-2) took the loss, allowing five runs in 5.0 innings with four strikeouts. All-American Scott Gorgen (3-1) picked up the win, allowing just one hit in 8.0 innings while striking out nine.
Kevin Macdonald went 1-for-4 with a single up the middle while Vinnie Catricala had the only other Rainbow base hit.
The Anteaters jumped on Alexander early in the game, scoring two runs on three hits, including two that didn't leave the infield. All-American Ollie Linton again got a hit to leadoff the third inning. Linton then stole second and moved to third on a ground out before scoring on a sacrifice squeeze, making it 3-0.
UCI got two more runs in the fifth to put them ahead 5-0. Gorgan was able to take a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Macdonald broke it up with a single up the middle. But UH wasn't able to bring Macdonald around, keeping the score at 5-0.
The Anteaters were able to put up four more runs in the eighth, making the final score 9-0.
The two teams will close their series with a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 1 p.m. (10 a.m. HST), as the game scheduled for Sunday has been moved up with the chance of rain that day.
