SURPRISE, Ariz. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (5-6) fell to the Portland Pilots (6-2) 15-8 in their last game of the Coca-Cola Classic at George Brett Field on the Suprise Recreation Campus Saturday.
Josh Slaats (0-1) took the loss while Brennan Thorpe (1-0) picked up the win.
Vinnie Catricala went 3-for-5 with three RBI, three runs and a home run. Jonathan Hee continued to play great in the tournament, going 4-for-5 with a run. Brandon Haislet added a two-run home run with two runs scored while Jeffrey Van Doornum was 2-for-5. Kevin Fujii came off the bench to go 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Portland jumped on the Rainbow pitchers early, scoring two in the first inning, three in the second inning and one in the third inning to take a quick 6-0 lead. The Pilots then exploded with a six-run fifth inning to get their lead to 12-0 before the Rainbows would respond.
Hawai`i got a three-run sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by Haislet. But Portland kept pouring it on, scoring three more runs in the next two innings.
The 'Bows made it look a little better on the scoreboard as Catricala hit a solo home run in the eighth and a two-run single in the ninth. Fujii then added a two-run single of his own, making the final score 15-8.
The 'Bows return home to host No. 10 Long Beach State for a three-game series at Les Murakami Stadium from March 7-9.
