LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Long Beach State (9-6) shut out the No. 15 University of Hawai`i softball team (11-3) for the second straight time in three weeks. 49ers' pitcher Brooke Turner stymied UH's offense, holding them to only three hits for the game.
Hawai`i's Kate Robinson (4-3) took the loss, throwing only 2.0 innings. She gave up four runs on three hits with three walks and a strike out. It was the shortest stint for Robinson in her career.
Senior pitcher Jessica Morton came in and threw the final 4.0 innings. She retired the first 11 batters she faced in a row. The only runner that reached safely was hit by a pitch. Morton had three strike outs for the game with no walks.
Long Beach State scored early and often. In the bottom of the first inning, Whitney Radcliff walked on four straight balls. She moved to second on a throwing error to put runners on second and third. Clean-up hitter Jennifer Griffin then hit a sacrifice line drive to leftfield. Radcliff tagged up and scored easily from third.
In the second, Danielle Linke hit a double to rightfield. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Levine. Next, Brianna Goad drew a walk to put runners at the corners for the 49ers. Franciska Morlet then grounded out to third, but it moved Goad into scoring position for Jessica Beaver who got a single through the left side of the infield to score both runners to go up 3-0 after two complete innings.
In the third, LBSU scored their final run. Lacy Tyler drew a walk to start the inning off. Griffin then laced a double to left-centerfield to drive in Tyler from second. UH's Morton then entered the game for Robinson and put the fire out and shut down LBSU the rest of the way.
For Hawai`i, it was the second time they lost to Long Beach State this season. In Hawai`i's first tournament of the season, the Paradise Classic, Hawai`i took two games off the 49ers, but the Beach won the last game of the tournament, 1-0 over the 'Bows. It marked the second time that Turner defeated UH this year.
Hawai`i's next games will be tomorrow at 3:45 pm against California and 6:00 pm versus host, UNLV. The 'Bows will end their tournament with the 9:00 am game on Sunday against Pittsburgh.
