STOCKTON, Calif. - The day the University of Hawai`i men's volleyball team fell out of the CBS College Sports Network/AVCA Coaches Poll for the first time in school history, the Warriors swept its two-match series with Pacific, 30-25, 25- 30, 30-18, 30-26, Monday night at the Alex G. Spanos Event Center.
The Warriors (6-7, 5-5 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) were ranked in every coaches poll since 1986, a span of 340 weeks prior to Monday's ranking. Ironically, UH won its only match last week, a four-game road win at UOP. In last week's poll, the Warriors were tied for 14th.
With Monday's win, Hawai`i moved up two spots in the MPSF standings to eighth entering its two-match series with ninth- ranked Stanford beginning on Wednesday. The Cardinal (10-6, 6-6 MPSF) are coming off a split of then-top-ranked Brigham Young in Provo, Utah, including a three-game sweep on Saturday.
The Warriors jumped out to a 22-19 lead in game one en route to a 30-25 victory. The Tigers responded in game two jumping out to an 8-2 advantage and winning by an identical 30-25 score.
In game three, the Warriors played flawlessly, hitting .385 while limiting the Tigers to .143. UH led 15-7 at the midway point and cruised to a 30-18 win.
Game four was much like the third game with Hawai`i taking an 8-4 lead and extending it to 13-7. The Tigers battled back closing to within 20-18 before UH closed out the match 30- 26
Jacob Schkud led the Warriors with 17 kills on 47 percent hitting. James Clar added 12 kills and nine digs while freshman Joshua Walker had 11 kills.
Pekka Seppanen and Jason Borchin each had 22 kills to lead the Tigers (1-14, 1-11 MPSF).
The Hawai`i-Stanford series runs Wednesday and Thursday at Maples Pavilion. Match time is 7:00 p.m. (5:00 p.m. HST) both nights.
