CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The No. 14 University of Hawai`i softball team (7-1) defeated Michigan State, 6-1 in their second game in the Palm Springs Classic.
Courtney Baughman earned the victory with a complete-game effort, while the offense got 10 hits from seven different players.
Baughman (4-0) yielded one run while spacing six hits. She walked two and struck out three. It is her fourth complete game win in as many starts.
Hawai`i had a pair of two out rallies that proved to be too much to overcome for the Spartans (4-4). In the bottom of the first, after a strike out and a fly to left, Kaulana Gould got things started with a hard-hit single that deflected of the shortstop and rolled into left. Kate Robinson then drew a walk, and Brandi Peiler followed with a base hit to left to score Gould from second. Audrey Andrade then drew the second walk of the inning to load the bases for Julie Franklin who got a hit to right-centerfield. Coming in on the play was Robinson to put UH up 2-0 after one complete inning.
Michigan State cut the lead in half in the top of the second when Gina Mondo hit a double to right-center with one out. After a pop-up to second, Heidi Purtzer hit a shot up the middle to score Mondo easily from second.
The Spartans again got the first two outs of the bottom of the second on a strike out and a ground out to third. But Hawai`i then rallied on two. Warwick beat out the throw on an infield single to second. Then Spartans pitcher Shae Bass proceeded to walk two batters to load the bases. With Peiler at the plate, Bass had a wild pitch that bounced around the backstop allowing both Warwick and Gould to score. Peiler eventually drew the third straight walk, and Michigan State inserted Lesley Noel to pitch in relief. Andrade, with runners at first and third, then came through with a single to right-centerfield, driving in Robinson from third. That pushed UH's lead to 5-1.
In the sixth, Richie-Anne Titcomb reached on an infield single to third to start things off. Tanisha Milca then hit another grounder to third, but this time the throw sailed wide of first which allowed both runs to move into scoring position. Warwick then lifted a fly ball to right. Tagging at third was Titcomb who sprinted home for Hawai`i's sixth and final run of the game.
The Rainbow Wahine will now take on No. 11 UCLA in a rematch of last year's Los Angeles Regional at 8:00 pm tonight.
