HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (2-1) fell to the UH-Hilo Vulcans (1-2) 4-3 in the series finale in front of a crowd of 3,229 at Les Murakami Stadium Sunday.
Alex Capaul took the loss for Hawai`i while Kekoa Lee got the win for UH-Hilo. Dustin Gilmore came in to pick up a two inning save.
Shane Hoey and Brandon Haislet both went 1-for-4 with one RBI each. Kevin Fujii had one RBI and one run while Sean Montplaisir went 1-for-4 with a triple and a run. Jonathan Hee added a 1-for-1 game with two walks and two hit-by-pitches.
The Rainbows opened the scoring in the third inning as Hoey singled in Fujii, putting the 'Bows up 1-0.
But the Vulcans responded in the top of the fourth. Thomas Brown tied the score, scoring on a wild pitch. Dayne Ogawa then hit a ground-rule double that brought in a run to make it 2-1 before Shane Kessel hit a two-run single to make it 4-1.
Fujii drove in Montplaisir in the fifth to cut it back to a two-run game. Haislet hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3 in the seventh. But the Rainbows missed a big opportunity in the inning, leaving the bases loaded with the one-run deficit.
But Gilmore came in for the eighth and ninth innings, holding the Rainbows off the scoreboard to preserve the 4-3 victory.
The 'Bows next host San Francisco for a four-game series starting on Friday, Feb. 22, at 6:35 p.m.
