HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (2-0) had two home runs in their 9-2 victory over the UH-Hilo Vulcans (0-2) in front of a crowd of 2,053 at Les Murakami Stadium Saturday.
Jared Alexander pitched well, allowing no runs, five hits and two walks in 8.0 innings, to get the win. Joe Davis took the loss for UH-Hilo.
Jonathan Hee hit his first career home run, going 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and a stolen base. Vinnie Catricala also had a home run, going 1-for-2 with two runs. Sean Montplaisir was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run while Matthew Roquemore had a two-run double in his lone at bat of the game.
The Rainbows got on the board early in the game as DuPree hit a RBI double in the top of the first. DuPree then scored later in the inning on a single by Macdonald, giving Hawai`i the quick 2-0 edge.
The two starting pitchers dominated the middle innings, holding both teams off the scoreboard through the sixth inning. But Catricala came up with a big blast in the bottom of the seventh, hitting the Rainbows' first home run of the season to left field, pushing their lead to 3-0.
The Rainbows then blew it open in the eighth inning. Hee started the scoring by with his home run to left. Montplaisir added a two-run single before Roquemore hit a two-run double to get the Hawai`i advantage to 9-0.
The Vulcans put up two runs in the ninth to cut the final back to 9-2.
The two teams will close out the series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. Freshman Alex Capaul is scheduled to make his collegiate debut for the Rainbows.
