Wichmann Captures Pentathlon Title At UW Invite

SEATTLE - University of Hawai'i track and field athlete Annett Wichmann won the pentathlon at the University of Washington Invitational, Friday, at Dempsey Indoor. Wichmann scored an NCAA provisional standard of 4,027 points, the third best score nationally this season.

Wichmann, the reining Western Athletic Conference pentathlon champion, will likely earn a spot to her second straight NCAA Indoor Championship appearance, just missing the automatic qualification by 23 points.

Teammate Mallory Gilbert placed fourth overall with 3,691 points. Senior Chantelle Wilder competed in the women's 5K and placed seventh with a personal best 17:03.63.

Wichmann's first place finish included a school 60-meter hurdle event record of 8.99 seconds and a personal event best in the high jump of 5-8 (1.73m). In the three other events, the Jena, Germany native heaved the shot put 43-4.25 (13.21m), leaped 17-6.25 (5.34m) and clocked in at 2:19.60 in the 800-meters.

Stanford's Lauren Stewart placed second 3,785 points followed by Danielle Ayers-Stamper (3,762) out of Club Northwest.

Gilbert posted four personal event bests in the five events. In addition she shattered her PR overall point total by 235 points. She bested personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles (9.45), shot put (36-4, 10.76m), long jump (18-3.25, 5.57m), and 800-meter (2:30.78). In addition, she cleared 5-8 (1.73m) in the high jump.

Wilder's 5K time was 72 seconds better than her previous best which she set last year in Seattle.
