HONOLULU –
Roderick Flemings exploded for 37 points to lead the University of Hawai`i Rainbow Warrior basketball team to a 75-55 win over Eastern Washington Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH improved to 4-3 with its fourth straight home win.
The 37 points by Flemings tied the most ever scored by a Rainbow Warrior in the Stan Sheriff Center. Tes Whitlock set the mark versus Seton Hall in 1994, in just the second-ever UH game played in the arena. Flemings scored 15 of his points in the first half and 22 after the break. He finished 16-of-23 from the field, 1-of-3 from three-point land and 4-of-6 from the line. The junior also added five rebounds, four assists and a steal.
Flemings scoring was particularly crucial in the second half when Eastern Washington (6-3) looked to rally from a double-digit halftime deficit. UH led 38-26 at the break on the strength of Flemings and 54 percent team shooting.
UH, however, came out flat in the second half. The Eagles scored seven straight to cut to the lead to 38-33. Flemings broke the Hawai`i drought with a jumper nearly four minutes into the half. Eastern Washington would stay within striking distance when Milan Stanojevic buried back-to-back three pointers to make it a 50-44 game with nine minutes remaining.
But Flemings shut the door on the Eagles at that point, scoring nine straight points on an array of baskets including a jumper, three-point play, dunk and fast break layup.
Bill Amis completed UH's decisive 12-0 run with a three-point play of his own and UH held a commanding 62-44 lead with less than six minutes remaining.
Flemings left to a rousing ovation with 2:13 left having scored more than half the team's points at the point as the 'Bows led, 71-52.
Amis was the only other UH player in double figures as he finished with 11 points, four rebounds and three blocks. Benny Valentine led Eastern Washington with 14 points, but was held to just one basket after the half.
The Rainbow Warriors shot 51 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the Eagles, 34-23. Hawai`i also committed a season-low 12 turnovers.
UH next faces Chicago State (3-5) on Monday, Dec. 15 in the second of eight straight home games. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
