Ian Harrington took a no-hitter 6.1 innings as the University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (29-19) beat the UH-Hilo Vulcans (12-33-1) 10-1 at Francis Wong Stadium Thursday. Harrington (7-6) pitched a gem, allowing one run on one hit, with two walks and seven strikeouts in 8.0 innings to get the victory. Joe Davis (2-7) took the loss for the Vulcans.
Vinnie Catricala went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run. Jonathan Hee added a 3-for-5 game with two doubles and two runs while Derek DuPree went 3-for-4 with a run and one RBI. Justin Frash was 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs. Brandon Haislet also went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, with Elijah Christensen adding a 2-for-3 game with a run.
Catricala got the UH offense going in the top of the second inning, blasting a solo home run to left field. The Rainbows added to their lead in the fourth inning, as Kris Sanchez, Catricala and Landon Hernandez drove in a run each, making it 4-0.
The 'Bows added another run in the fifth, then exploded for four more in the top of the seventh, making it 9-0.
In the mean time, Harrington was in complete command, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning. With one out, Ryan Taiarol broke up the no-no with a single that went just over the out-stretched arm of Hee at second base. Dayne Ogawa then hit a sacrifice fly, scoring the lone Vulcan run, getting it to 9-1.
Frash later hit his solo home run in the eighth, making the final score 10-1.
The two teams will continue the series tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Wong Stadium, before the series-finale on Saturday, May 5, at noon.
