RENO, Nev. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (31-20, 9-10 WAC) fell to the Nevada Wolf Pack (29-22, 12-7) 7-5 in the series-opener at Peccole Park Saturday.
Ian Harrington (7-7) took the loss for the 'Bows while Ryan Rodriguez (8-5) got the win for UN. Matt Renfree came in and got the save for the Pack.
Kris Sanchez went 3-for-5 with two runs, one RBI and two doubles. Elijah Christensen added a 3-for-4 game with one run and one RBI. Landon Hernandez was 2-for-4 with a run and one RBI while Derek DuPree went 1-for-4 with one RBI.
Nevada opened the scoring in the second as David Ciarlo doubled in two runs. The Wolf Pack got it to 4-0 in the fourth before the UH bats awoke. Christensen put the Rainbows on the board with a RBI-single in the top of the fifth, with Sanchez adding another run on a RBI-double in the sixth.
Nevada would add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth as Jason Rodriguez hit a ball to centerfield, sending Brandon Haislet to the wall. As Haislet hit the wall, he fell to the ground, allowing Rodriguez to come around and score on an inside-the-park home run.
Hawai`i responded with a two-run seventh, getting it back to 6-4. After another Wolf Pack run in the bottom of the seventh, the 'Bows scored on a RBI-single by Hernandez, getting it back to within two runs. UH had a chance to add more in the inning with the bases loaded and just one out. But Renfree was able to get a ground out and a strikeout to end the threat.
The two teams continue their series tomorrow at 6 p.m. (3 p.m. HST)
