HONOLULU - The 15th ranked Rainbow Wahine softball team (40-8, 11-1 WAC) defeated Chaminade in a scrimmage, 5-0. In the intrasquad scrimmage that followed, the White team came out victorious behind the pitching and timely hitting of
Justine Smethurst in a 1-0 win over the Black at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Chaminade 0, Hawai`i 5
In the first game, Chaminade borrowed the UH battery of pitcher Jessica Morton and catcher Stacey Yamada on defense.
The Rainbow Wahine got on the scoreboard quickly in the bottom of the first. Tanisha Milca led the inning off by getting hit by the pitch. Clare Warwick followed with a single to left that put runners at first and second. Kaulana Gould then laid down a sacrifice bunt to push both runners into scoring position for Tyleen Tausaga who then hit an opposite field single to left to drive in Milca. Morton was then able to get a fielder's choice ground out to short who cut down Warwick at the plate. Hawai`i then loaded the bases, but Morton was able to retire the side with a strike out looking.
In the third, Warwick started things off with her second single to left. Gould then stroked a double to left-centerfield to score Warwick from first for Hawai`i's second run. Morton then got three consecutive outs on a pop up to short, a fly to right and a fly ball to center to end the inning.
Hawai`i tacked on two more runs in the fifth, extending their lead to 4-0. Milca led off by beating out an infield single to second. After two fly outs, Tausaga got her second hit of the game with a single to right-center. An error on the rightfielder on the play allowed Tausaga to scoot to second and scored Milca from first. Kate Robinson then hit a single to left to score Tausaga for the innings second run.
In the sixth, with two outs, Katie Grimes cranked a solo home run over the leftfield fence for UH's fifth and final run.
Robinson got the win in the scrimmage. She threw the complete game, two-hit shut-out with 10 strike outs and two walks. Morton gave up five runs, three earned runs, on nine hits with four strike outs and no walks.
UH White 1, UH Black 0
In what turned out to be a pitcher's duel and defensive battle, it was the White team that came out on top, 1-0. The game remained scoreless through the first six innings. Justine Smethurst threw the complete game, giving up only one hit with six strike outs. Courtney Baughman threw for the Black squad and only gave up one run on three hits with three strike outs.
The winning run was scored in the top of the seventh. With Kanani Warren on second, Stacey Yamada laid down a sacrifice bunt. An errant throw by Baughman put runners at the corners. Then, with no outs, Smethurst stepped to the plate and hit a sharp single up the middle to drive in Warren for the game's only run.
Hawai`i ends its home schedule this weekend with a pivotal three-game series against conference opponent, No. 24 Fresno State Bulldogs. Friday, Apr. 20's single game starts at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday's double header will start at 2:00 p.m.
