Warriors Earns MPSF No. 6 Seed With Four-Set Win Over Stanford

HONOLULU - The 10th ranked University of Hawai`i Warrior volleyball team posted its ninth-straight win with a 30-27, 24-30, 30-24, 30-25 victory over unranked Stanford tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

A crowd of 4,848 witnessed the Warriors improve to 13-13 on the season and 11-11 in the MPSF. The Cardinal fell to 3-25 and 2-20.

It was also Senior Night for four Warriors - Brian Beckwith, Eric Kalima, Dio Dante and Lauri Hakala.

In the first set, UH fell behind 14-11 before mounting its comeback. UH whittled the deficit down quickly before tying it at 15. The Warriors eventually took the lead for good at 21-20 on a Stanford attack error and held on 30-27.

Stanford came out strong in the second jumping out to a 10-6 lead and stretched it 17-11 as they tied it at a set apiece with a 30-24 win.

UH got its block going in the third, stuffing six Cardinal shots. Dante, who had not recorded a block in the first two sets, picked up four of his seven blocks in the third leading UH to a 30-24 win.

A Cardinal service error by Miki Groppi broke a nine all tie in the fourth and the Warriors never trailed the rest of the way, finishing off the Cardinal, 30-25.

Hakala led the way for UH with 21 kills, 10 digs and hit .300. Matt Vanzant tallied 15 slams while Dante added 14 kills. Beckwith ended the night with 47 assists and Dante added seven blocks with Matt Rawson in on six. UH hit .356 collectively.

The Cardinal were led by Kawika Shoji's 23 kills while Evan Romero posted 22 and Matt Ceran 10. Groppi handed out 58 assists and Brandon Williams snuffed a match-high eight blocks.

The Warriors head to the MPSF's No. 3 seed UC Irvine for an April 21 showdown with the Anteaters. The winner advances to Malibu where Pepperdine is the host of the MPSF semi-finals and championship matches April 26 and 28.
