Box Score
HONOLULU - The No.25 Rainbow Wahine (16-5) held off Kent State for a 1-0 victory in the final game of the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament. It was the third time the two teams met in the tourney, with UH winning all three games.
Kate Robinson went to 3-0 on the season with a four-hit, complete-game, shut-out. Hawai`i finished third in the tournament.
The Golden Flashes got off to a quick start by loading the bases in the top of the first with no outs. Brittany Robinson led the game off with a double to left-centerfield. The next batter, Jessica Toocheck walked. Then Corey Houk had a blooper single over short to load the bases. But UH's Robinson then settled down and got two pop-outs and struck out the sixth batter in the inning to escape unscathed.
The Rainbow Wahine posted the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth. Clare Warwick led the inning off with a hard hit ball that went right between the legs of the KSU shortstop. The ball kept rolling, allowing Warwick to sprint to second. An out later, Tyleen Tausaga hit a single to center to score Warwick.
For Robinson, she threw the complete 7.0 innings, scattering four hits while walking three and striking out five. Her three wins have come on three shut-outs this season.
The Golden Flashes' Kylie Reynolds took the loss, throwing 6.0 innings, giving up only three hits with no walks and striking out four.
The win was UH's seventh by one-run this season and it was the sixth time this season that Hawai`i was out-hit but still found a way to win the game.
Both Kaulana Gould and Brandi Peiler hit .333 for the tourney and were Hawai`i's two selections to the all-tournament team. Gould went 7-for-21 with four runs scored. Peiler hit 6-for-18, scored two runs and hit two home runs, including a game winning grand slam against Kent State. She also had a team-high eight RBI.
Hawai`i has one day off and then will play Boston College of the Big East on Tuesday at 6:00 pm. On Wednesday, the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament gets underway with Oregon State, Pacific, Liberty, and Boston College.
