HONOLULU - On the strength of two runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, the University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (21-9, 2-1 WAC) defeated the Nevada Wolf Pack (15-14, 1-2) 5-4 in front of a crowd of 2,414 in the series finale at the Les Murakami Stadium Sunday.
Tyler Davis (4-0) gave up one run in 2.2 innings to get the win while Kody Keroher (3-2) took the loss for UN.
Elijah Christensen went 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and a run. Vinnie Catricala added a 2-for-3 game with a run and a double while Jonathan Hee went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Brandon Haislet also went 2-for-4 with a double.
Nevada opened the scoring early on, scoring two unearned runs in the top of the first. After Kris Sanchez singled in a run in the bottom of the first, Nathan Young and Derek DuPree both drove in runs in the second, giving UH the 3-2 edge.
The Wolf Pack came up with a run in the fifth to tie it up and another in the top of the eighth to take the 4-3 lead. But Hawai`i had one last burst left in them. Christensen doubled in Catricala to tie the game. Hee then brought in Christensen on a single, giving UH the 5-4 advantage.
Davis was able to hold the Pack in the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning, giving the 'Bows the exciting 5-4 win.
UH will next host San Jose State for a three-game conference series, starting Friday, March 30, at 6:35 p.m.
