Warriors Sweep Past Lewis

HONOLULU - The 12th ranked University of Hawai`i Warrior volleyball team extended its winning streak to four with a straight-set victory over Lewis tonight in front of 3,213 at the Stan Sheriff Center in a non-conference match.

With the win, UH improves to 7-13 while Lewis falls to 14-9.

Matt Vanzant led all attackers with 14 kills while Jim Clar added nine - all in the third set. Brian Beckwith handed out 43 assists on the night while Dio Dante posted a match-high six blocks. UH, as a team, hit .370.

Drew Pickering led Lewis with 10 kills with Billy Sahagian and Jared Dayton each contributing nine apiece. Nick Perakes sported a match-best 12 digs. Lewis his .236 collectively as a team.

The Flyers took an early 6-4 lead in the first. Lauri Hakala and Beckwith picked up kills and a Hakala ace gave UH an 8-7 lead it would not relinquish. UH led by as many as six (22-16) and held off a late Lewis rally to win, 30-26.

In Game 2, UH jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead and extended to as many as nine before eventually winning, 30-22.

Game 3 saw 15 ties and five lead changes until a Clar kill broke a 15 all deadlock. Clar picked up nine kills the game and hit .692 off the bench. UH ended the match with a 30-28 win.

The Warriors are on the road the next two weeks in California. UH head to UC San Diego for a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches March 29-30. Then the following week play at Long Beach State April 6-7. The final two home matches for UH are against Stanford April 13-14.
