HONOLULU - A three-run walk-off home run by
Evan Zimny gave the University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (20-8) a victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack (14-13) 5-3 in front of a crowd of 2,686 in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday.
Jayson Kramer (3-0) allowed no runs and no hits with just one walk in 1.2 innings, striking out four, to get the victory. Ryan Rodriguez (3-4) had the tough luck loss for the Wolf Pack, pitching 8.1 innings with three earned runs.
The heroics came in the bottom of the ninth as the 'Bows were down 3-1. Justin Frash led off the inning with a two-base error, then scored on a RBI-single by Brandon Haislet to cut the deficit to one run. Kris Sanchez then reached on a fielder's choice before Elijah Christensen walked, setting the table for Zimny. On a 1-2 count, the junior hit a high fly ball to right that stayed just inside the foul poll, giving UH the dramatic 5-3 win.
Haislet ended the day 1-for-2 with one RBI, a stolen base and two walks. Derek DuPree added a 1-for-4 game with a run and a triple, while Frash went 1-for-4 with a run and one RBI.
Nevada got on the board early in the game, taking a 2-0 lead on a two-run double by Dan Eastham. Frash drove in a run in the fourth to cut it back to 2-1. But the Pack again extended their lead to two runs with a RBI-double by Matt Suleski in the sixth.
The two teams continue their series tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium. Mark Rodrigues will pitch for UH against UN's Rod Scurry (0-4).
