Kate Robinson threw a complete game, two hit shut-out over Nevada, 9-0 in six innings. She also helped herself out at the plate, hitting a pair of two-run home runs, including a walk-off homer to end the game. No. 23 Hawai`i (28-7, 1-0 WAC) continues the three-game series tomorrow against Nevada (7-20, 0-1 WAC) in a double header starting at 6:00 pm at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Robinson (8-0, 1-0 WAC) threw her eighth complete game win and her fifth shut-out of the season. She threw 6.0 innings, scattered three hits with two walks and a season-high nine strike outs. On offense, Robinson, the number five batter, launched two, two-run home runs deep to leftfield. She now leads the team with 11 round-trippers this season.
The 'Bows got their offense going in the bottom of the third inning. Alana Power started things off with a double to the left-centerfield gap. She moved to third on a squib hit that spun off the pitcher by Katie Grimes. With runners at the corners, Richie Anne Titcomb hit a sacrifice fly to rightfield. On the play, Power tagged up at three and ran home, avoiding the tag, for the game's first run. Grimes moved into scoring position on the throw home and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Clare Warwick then hit a single up the middle to score Grimes from third. A couple of wild pitches moved Warwick all the way to third before Kaulana Gould hit another sacrifice fly to right that scored Warwick easily from third. The rally kept going with two outs when Tyleen Tausaga drew a walk, which was followed by Robinson's first two-run homer. UH scored a total of five runs in the third.
In the fourth, UH posted a single run when Gould ripped a triple to the rightfield corner to score Warwick who sprinted all the way from first to push Hawai`i's lead to 6-0 after four complete innings.
Valana Manuma got a one out walk in the fifth inning to start another Rainbow rally. Power then got her second hit of the night with a single to left to put runners at first and second. Then, Titcomb came through with her second hit of the game to rightfield that drove in Manuma from second. After five innings, UH led, 7-0.
Gould led the sixth inning off with a single to right. Then with one out, Robinson hit the two-run, walk-off home run over the leftfield fence to end the game with the mercy rule in effect.
For the Wolf Pack, Katie Holverson took the loss, throwing 2.2 innings, giving up four runs on four hits with a walk. Jordan McPherson then came in relief and threw 1.0 innings. She gave up two runs on four hits with a walk. Tiffany Hoeft-Bass closed the game, firing the final 1.2 innings. She gave up three runs on four hits with one walk.
The two teams square off again tomorrow in a double header starting at 6:00 pm at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
