Box Score

HONOLULU - The 23rd ranked Rainbow Wahine (24-7)went toe-to-toe with No.14 Baylor (25-6). But in the top of the seventh, the Lady Bears' Alex Colyer, came through with a clutch base hit to drive in the winning run. Hawai`i is now 2-1 in the 2007 Bank of Hawaii Invitational, while Baylor improved to 1-1.

Baylor jumped out to a quick, 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Ashley Monceaux cranked a two run home run. The homer drove in Nicole Wesley who had reached on a single to left.

Tyleen Tausaga cut the lead in half, when she led the bottom of the second off with a drive that sailed over the rightfield fence for her eighth home run of the season.

In the bottom of the sixth, Hawai`i rallied to knot the score at 2-2. Kaulana Gould starting things going with a double to rightfield with one out. Next, Tausaga was walked for the second time to put runners at first and second for Kate Robinson. Robinson hit a ground ball fielder's choice to short. The shortstop's only play was to get Tausaga forced out at two. With two outs and runners at the corners, Brandi Peiler then came through with a sharp single to centerfield to score Gould from third. On the play, the ball ricocheted off the centerfielder to allow both Robinson and Peiler to advance into scoring position. But Baylor pitcher Lisa Ferguson then settled down to get one of her 10 strike outs of the night to squelch the rally.

But the Lady Bears fought back. Baylor's Miriam Romero led off the top of the seventh with a double to the left centerfield gap. UH pitcher Justine Smethurst then got a fly out to left on a check swing and a ground out to short for two outs. But Colyer, USA Softball/ESPN.com National Player of the Week, then stepped to the plate and hit a little looper that fell just in front of the glove of a sprinting Peiler in left to drive in what proved to be the winning run.

Baylor took the 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Alana Power drew a walk to start the inning. But Ferguson then shut the door, retiring the last three batters in a row.

The loss dropped Smethurst to 9-5 on the season. She fired her 11th complete game of the season, giving up seven hits with just one walk and she tied her season-high with nine strike outs.
