HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (15-8) fell to the No. 24 Arizona Wildcats (15-6) 3-1 in front of a crowd of 2,562 at the Les Murakami Stadium Sunday.
Matt Daly (1-1) took the loss in relief while Cory Burns (1-1) got the win. Daniel Schlereth struck out the side in the ninth to earn his sixth save of the year.
Elijah Christensen led the way, going 2-for-4 with one RBI and a stolen base. Derek DuPree also went 2-for-4 while Brandon Haislet was 1-for-2 with a run. Joshua Schneider also pitched well for UH, allowing just one run on four hits in 7.0 innings.
Arizona got on the scoreboard early, scoring in the top of the first. Hawai`i responded with a run in the second, driven in by Christensen, tying it at 1-1.
Hawai`i had a chance to score in the fourth, as Christensen singled up the middle with Haislet on second. But UA centerfielder T.J. Steele came up with a great throw, getting Haislet at the plate to keep the score tied. That was the way it stayed until the eighth, when the Wildcats took advantage of three UH errors, scoring two runs to go ahead 3-1.
The Rainbows weren't able to get any offense going in the bottom of the eighth or the ninth, giving UA the 3-1 victory.
Hawai`i will next host Wisconsin-Milwaukee for a four-game series starting Friday, March 16, at 6:35 p.m.
