HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team won their season-opener against the Santa Clara Broncos 8-1 in front of a crowd of 2,684 at the Les Murakami Stadium Friday.
Ian Harrington went 6.2 innings, allowing just one run on seven hits to get the win. Matt Wickswat got the loss for SCU.
Kris Sanchez led the way, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs. Evan Zimny added a 3-for-5 night with one RBI. Jonathan Hee was 2-for-3 with a run while Landon Hernandez went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Santa Clara got on the board in the top of the first as Matt Long doubled in a run, putting the Broncos up 1-0. Hawai`i tied the score in the second as Hernandez hit a RBI-single through the left side, making it 1-1.
The 'Bows took over the lead in the third as Sanchez, Elijah Christensen, Zimny and Hernandez all drove in runs, giving UH a 5-1 edge.
Hawai`i added two more runs in the sixth, driven in by Sanchez and Christensen. Then Brandon Haislet capped the scoring in the eighth with a RBI-single, scoring Justin Frash, making the final 8-1.
The two teams will go at it again tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. Mark Rodrigues will pitch for UH against SCU's Nate Garcia.
