Warriors Take Care Of Business Against Tritons

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Warrior volleyball team came out much more focused than 24 hours ago and it showed in a three-game sweep of UC San Diego tonight 30-20, 30-25, 30-18 in front of 3,534 at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH stretched its win streak to 17.

Matt Carere and Lauri Hakala led the way offensively for the Warriors posting 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Setter Brian Beckwith orchestrated a solid first two games dishing out 33 assists and gave way in Game 3 to freshman Sean Carney.

Hawai`i improved to 21-4 overall and 17-3 in the MPSF. UC San Diego fell to 1-26 and 0-20.

UH came out quick and strong in Game 1 streaking to leads of 7-1 and 12-3 en route to 30-20 win. Carere posted five of his match-high 13 kills in the first. UH outblocked UCSD 3.0 to nothing in the first game.

Game 2 began a little like the first two sets last night with the Tritons match UH point for point until the Warriors broke a 20 all tie on a UCSD attack error and a Hakala kill to give them some breathing room. With UH leading 25-24, the Warriors reeled off four-straight points and eventually won by five, 30-25. Reserve middle blocker Jacob Schkud, who played in only the third game, combined for six block assists and led all blockers in the match.

The third game saw UH break a 12-12 tie by winning nine of the next 10 points and eventually close out the match, 30-18.

UCSD was led by Jon Daze's 12 kills, while setter Brooks Dierdorff handed out 30 assists.

With the victory, UH has assured itself of no lower than a No. 2 seed in the upcoming MPSF Playoffs that begin with a play-in game on April 19.

Hawai`i completes its homestand and regular season next Friday and Saturday, April 14-15, at the SSC against rival Brigham Young.
