FRESNO, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (25-10, 3-4 WAC) fell the No. 21 Fresno State Bulldogs (25-10, 6-2) 6-1 on a nationally-televised broadcast on College Sports Television at Pete Beiden Field Saturday, ending an eight-game road winning streak.
Justin Costi (4-1) suffered his first loss of the year while Eddie Romero (8-1) picked up the win for Fresno State.
Tyler Davis pitched well out of the bullpen, allowing one run on three hits with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched. Joseph Spiers had the best game offensively, going 2-for-4 with a run, a double and a stolen base. Robbie Wilder went 1-for-4 with one RBI while Esteban Lopez added a double.
The Bulldogs came out with hot bats, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first and two in the second to jump out to an early 5-0 advantage. Hawai`i cut into the big deficit as Wilder drove in a run in the top of the third.
But the Rainbows couldn't capitalize on their opportunities, leaving 10 on base in the game. Fresno State got an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh as Ozzie Lewis hit a home run to right field, pushing the Bulldog edge to 6-1.
The two teams will close out the series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
