RENO, Nev. - Nevada's Kymberly Silagyi hit a walk-off single that drove in Cindy Elkins in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat the Rainbow Wahine (27-19, 7-6 WAC), 4-3. Pitcher Jordan McPherson picked up her second win of the day as a reliever. Hawai`i's
Jessica Morton held Nevada scoreless for six innings in relief, but gave up the winning run in the 10th to take the loss.
In the top of the third, the Wolfpack (24-28, 7-7 WAC) scored three runs to take the early lead. Elkins led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error on the leftfielder. Tyler Schafer then hit a double to centerfielde to score Elkins from second. The next batter, Silagyi, reached safely on a error on Hawai`i's pitcher, that moved Schafer to third. Brittany Puzey then hit a deep sacrifice fly to center to score Schafer easily from third. Two batters later, Sarah Hunt hit a double to left, scoring Silagyi from second to post the score at 3-0 in favor of the Wolfpack after three complete innings.
The Rainbow Wahine answered right back in the top of the fourth. Brandi Peiler led the inning off with a home run over the leftfield fence. The next batter, Tanisha Milca then got hit by a pitch. Kaulana Gould then ripped a line drive off the shin of the Nevada first baseman. On the play, Milca move to third for Kristi Yoshizawa who then hit a squib shot to the pitcher whose only play was at first, allowing Milca to score from third for Hawai`i's second run of the inning, that cut the Wolfpack lead to 3-2.
In the top of the sixth, Tyleen Tausaga led the inning off with a home run over the rightfield fence to knot the score at 3-3.
That's how the score remained for the next two-and-a-half innings, until Nevada score the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. Elkins led the inning off with a single to left. The next batter, Schafer, moved her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Then, Silagyi came through with the clutch single to left that scored the winning run.
For Hawai`i, Courtney Baughman got the start, throwing 3.0 innings, giving up three runs on five hits with one walk. Morton threw the bulk of the game, 6.1 innings, giving up one run on four hits with no walks and four strike outs.
Nevada's Candice Rainwater threw the first seven innings of the game, giving up three runs on five hits with a walk and three strike outs. McPherson came in relief and ended up with the victory. She threw 3.0 innings, giving up no runs on one hit with four strike outs.
The two teams play in the series finale tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
