Five Home Runs Lead Hawai`i To 10-1 Victory Over St. Mary's In Game Two

Box Score

MORAGA, Calif. - The Hawai`i softball team (25-17, 7-4 WAC) hit a school-record five home runs to defeat Saint Mary's, (5-41, 1-12 PCSC), 10-1 in six innings. Both Tanisha Milca and Kate Robinson hit two home runs a piece, with the fifth home coming off the bat of Brandi Peiler. Courtney Baughman earned the win, throwing the complete game. She spaced seven hits, walked none, and struck out one in the second game of today's double header at Cottrell Field.

Once again, the Rainbow Wahine got it going offensively in the third inning. Valana Manuma led the inning off with a sharp single to left. Clare Warwick then laid a sacrifice bunt down, but the pitcher tripped over the first baseman, and that left both runners safe at first and second. Peiler then came up promptly and hit a three-run home run over the leftfield fence. Two batters later, Milca hit a solo shot over the leftfield fence. Two batters after that, Kristi Yoshizawa hit a double down the rightfield line. Robinson then stepped up to hit the third home run of the inning with a bomb over the leftfield fence. After three-and-a-half innings, the Rainbow Wahine were up 6-0.

UH added a single run in the fourth when Peiler drove in Manuma with an RBI single that tipped off the glove of a leaping second baseman.

In the bottom of the fourth, SMC's Marcia-Marie Euker led the inning off with a double to the right-centerfield gap. The next batter, Lauren Mello hit a single to left that drove in a sprinting Euker from second. Baughman was able to get the next three batters out in a row to squelch the Gael rally.

Hawai`i tacked on another run in the fifth when Robinson hit her second home run of the game. It was a blast that landed three-quarters up a tree behind the leftfield fence. That made the score 8-1 after five innings.

Then, in the top of the sixth, Milca hit her second home run of the game. This time, it was a two-run shot that drove in Tyleen Tausaga who had reached on a fielding error by the leftfielder. That pushed the score to 10-1, and gave UH a nine run advantage that ended the game by the mercy rule.

For Robinson, in the last three games, she has gone 4-for-8 with three of the four hits being home runs.

The team will now bus to Reno, Nev. where they will take on WAC opponent Nevada this weekend in a three game series.
