Hawai`i Loses Heartbreaker To No.23 Fresno State, 1-0

Box Score

FRESNO, Calif. - Hawai`i (23-16, 7-3 WAC) fell to No.23 Fresno State (30-13, 8-1 WAC) in the first game of today's doubleheader. UH's Courtney Baughman (7-4, 2-1 WAC) and the Bulldogs' Robin Mackin (23-8, 5-1 WAC) were locked in a pitchers' duel with the game remaining scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when FSU scored one run on two outs to down UH, 1-0 at Bulldog Diamond.

Baughman threw a complete game, giving up the single run on five scattered hits with one walk and a strike out. The Bulldogs' had a runner in scoring position with no outs in three innings, but Baughman and the Hawai`i defense would stiffen and thwart potential rallies by getting the next three outs in a row.

FSU's Mackin also threw the complete 7.0 innings, shutting out the Rainbow Wahine. She gave up four hits and struck out 10 while walking none.

Mackin had a no-hitter going into the fourth inning. But with two outs, Tyleen Tausaga got a single to left. Then Tanisha Milca hit a line-drive double over the centerfielder's head to the fence. On the play Tausaga was sprinting around the bases from first and tried to score, but a perfect relay from 8-6-2 caught her at the plate.

In the bottom of the sixth, FSU's Christina Clark led the inning off with a walk. The next batter, Haley Perkins laid down a sacrifice bunt that pushed Clark to second. Baughman then got Merryann Barr to ground out to short for the second out. Then, with two outs, clean up hitter Kristin Sylvester hit a single to left to score Clark for the first run of the game and what proved to be the winning run. Nichole Willis followed with another single up the middle. On the hit, Sylvester tried to score from second, but UH centerfielder Kaulana Gould fired a one-hop throw to the plate to catcher Kristi Yoshizawa who made a good play on the ball and tagged the runner out.

The two teams face off in the series' finale in approximately 20 minutes.
