HONOLULU - The seventh ranked UCLA Bruins pulled off a four-game 18-30, 30-28, 30-22, 30-24 upset of No. 2 Hawai`i, snapping the Warriors' 19-match win streak tonight in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Quarterfinal match in front of 5,966 fans at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Bruins advance to Irvine, Calif., next week to take on third seed Pepperdine in the semifinals. The other semifinal match will be UC Irvine hosting Long Beach State.
The Warriors came out strong and dominated Game 1 posting a a solid 30-18 win out hitting the Bruins .438 to -.034. UH jumped out to early leads of 4-0 and 10-4 and cruised the rest of the way.
Game 2 saw the Bruins pick up momentum. With the game tied at 17, UCLA took four of the next five points and built a 21-18 lead. They held off a late UH rally as the Warriors pulled to within one but a UH attack error tied the match at one game apiece, 30-28.
UCLA broke a seven all tie in Game 3 outscoring Hawai`i 12-5 and built a commanding 19-12 lead and played side out the rest of the way winning, 30-22.
Game 4 was tied at six, when UCLA again began to gain separation. A Steve Klosterman kill, a UH rotation error, and a UH attack error gave UCLA a 9-6. The Warriors looked to be bringing momentum back to their court as they tied it at 19, but UCLA reeled off three-straight points. UH would again claw back into the game, tying it at 24, but UCLA scored the final six points of the match and won, 30-24.
UH's Lauri Hakala led all attackers with 17 kills, followed by Jose Delgado's 15. UCLA was led by Klosterman and Nick Scheftic's 14 kills.
Both teams struggled offensively as UH out hit UCLA .237 to .236, but the Warriors held the big advantage in the blocking department 13.5 to 7.5.
