HONOLULU - The Hawai`i softball team (21-13, 5-0 WAC) got its fourth straight shut-out, and seventh win in a row by downing San Jose State (13-19, 2-3 WAC) in the second game of today's double header.
Courtney Baughman (7-3, 2-0 WAC) scattered three hits, struck out six, and did not allow a Spartan runner past first base in the win. UH continues to lead the WAC with its 5-0 start.
Hawai`i scored quickly in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, second batter Clare Warwick reached on a walk. Brandi Peiler then hit a line-shot double to center to put runners at second and third with one out. Tyleen Tausaga then came to the plate and hit another double to straightaway center, scoring Warick from third, but a good Spartan relay from center-to-short-to-home, cut down Peiler at the plate. But Hawai`i had the early lead, 1-0 after one inning of play.
In the third, Hawai`i hit back-to-back doubles again. Valana Manuma led the inning off with a double off the Phiten banner on the leftfield fence. Warwick then stepped up and hit a ground-rule double that got stuck on the fly at the base of the centerfield fence. Warwick's double scored Manuma. A single by Peiler pushed Warwick to third. With runners at the corners, Tausaga then picked up her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Warwick to extend Hawai`i's lead to 3-0.
Baughman and the Hawai`i defense did the rest, retiring the last 13 of 14 Spartans in a row. It was the second complete-game, shut-out of the day for the Hawai`i pitching staff.
UH will now face WAC newcomer New Mexico State (21-13, 4-2 WAC) this weekend for a three-game series. The Aggies are coming off a three-game sweep of Louisiana Tech in which none of the games reached seven innings. Friday's single game is slated for 6:00 p.m. with a doubleheader on Saturday to start at 2:00 p.m.
