'Bows Beat Spartans 7-3 To Take First WAC Series

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (24-9, 2-3 WAC) defeated the San Jose State Spartans (20-12, 3-3) 7-3 in front of a crowd of 2,155 at the Les Murakami Stadium Sunday. Ian Harrington (4-1) earned the win while while Darrell Fisherbaugh picked up his sixth save of the season in relief. Matt Winck (2-1) took the loss for SJSU.

Justin Frash had a big day, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two doubles. Derek DuPree added a 3-for-5 game with two runs and two RBI. Robbie Wilder went 2-for-4 with two runs, a double and a RBI while Jonathan Hee was 2-for-4.

Both starting pitchers started out the game well, allowing a combined three hits in the first four innings played. Hawai`i took the first blow in the bottom of the fifth as DuPree and Frash hit back-to-back RBI-singles, pushing UH to a 2-0 edge.

San Jose State came right back with two runs on a single by Brian Chase in the top of the sixth, tying the score at 2-2. Wilder and Frash both hit RBI-doubles in the bottom of the seventh to give Hawai`i back the lead at 4-2, only to see the Spartans answer with a run in the top of the eighth, cutting the deficit back to 4-3.

But the Rainbows were not done. DuPree hit a RBI-single and Frash a two-run double to add three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth before Fisherbaugh closed the door in the ninth, giving the 'Bows the 7-3 victory.

Hawai`i will now take their first WAC road trip to Fresno State, playing the Bulldogs on April 7, 8 and 9. Fresno State had their 17-game winning streak snapped at New Mexico State today, but are still the leaders in the conference with a 5-1 WAC record.
