HONOLULU - No. 2 Hawai`i won a thrilling five-set battle tonight over No. 4 Brigham Young in the program's first ever "White Out" and Senior Night at the Stan Sheriff Center in front of the largest crowd of the season.
Some 6,826 fans got their money's worth watching their Warrior extend their winning streak to 19 with a 27-30, 30-26, 30-25, 26-30, 15-12 victory to improve to 23-4 on the season and 19-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
UH is the No. 2 seed in the MPSF Championship and will host the winner of the UCLA-UC Santa Barbara game next Saturday, April 22, at 7 p.m. at the SSC. The Play-In game takes place at UCLA on Wednesday, April 19. BYU, with the loss, will be the No. 5 seed and travel to Long Beach State next Saturday.
The first game seesawed until BYU broke a 14 all tie with a run of three straight points. The Cougars increased their lead to as many as five (26-21) before holding on with a 30-27 win.
Game 2 saw BYU jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before UH clawed back to tie it at 12 and took their first lead at 16-15. With the score tied at 21, UH went on a 4-0 run and kept the four point margin to tie the match at a game apiece with a 30-26 win.
UH broke open a 16 all third game with another mini run of five unanswered points and played basically side out the rest of the way to go up 2-1 with a 30-25 win.
The Cougars (18-8, 14-8 MPSF) won Game 4, 30-26. The highlight of the game was BYU going on a 10-5 run after the score was tied at 10 to give them breathing room and eventually tie up the match at two games all.
The UH fans got into the match in Game 5 and seemed to be the seventh man on the court as the Warriors came out strong and took early leads of 4-1 and 6-2 and eventually held off a late rally to win a thriller, 15-12.
