HONOLULU - No. 2 ranked Hawai`i handed No. 4 Brigham Young one of its worst losses of the season tonight 30-14, 30-21, 30-21 in front of 5,414 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Hawai`i (22-4, 18-3 MPSF) blitzed BYU (18-7 14-7 MPSF) in Game 1, 30-14. UH outhit BYU .591 to -.097 as UH slammed down 14 kills and made only one error in 22 swings, while BYU had nine kills and committed 12 miscues. Matt Carere posted five kills in nine swings in the opening set for the Warriors.
BYU came out much stronger in Game 2, but they had no answers for the UH offense as the Warriors hit a sizzling .636 and posted four blocks to ease to a 30-21 win and take a two games to none lead.
Game 3 saw the Warriors break a 4-4 tie by reeling off four straight points and increased the margin to 18-10 and never looked back winning the final set, 30-21, and snapping a six-match losing streak to the Cougars.
Jose Delgado led the UH charge with a match-high 14 kills, followed by Lauri Hakala's 13, and Carere added 11. Setter Brian Beckwith dished out 39 assists in 61 set attempts for a .639 average, his best of the season.
As a team, the Warriors scorched the court with a .547 hitting percentage to BYU's .078. UH also outblocked (8.5 to 5.5) and out dug (28 to 20) BYU.
The Cougars did not have a player record double figures in kills for the second time this season, as Yosleyder led BYU with seven.
BYU's 14 points in the first game was its lowest point total in a game this season, and their 56 total points was also a season low.
The two teams meet again Saturday evening at 7 for the final regular season match of the season. Tomorrow is the first ever "White Out" at a men's volleyball match as all fans are encouraged to wear white shirts.
