HONOLULU - In the Rainbow Wahine's opening game of the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling tournament, the offense racked up 20 hits and freshman pitcher
Courtney Baughman fired a two-hit, complete game shutout, enroute to a 14-0 win over Longwood (9-9). Baughman gave up only two hits while walking one and striking out five.
In the bottom of the first, Hawai`i started scoring from the get go. Freshman outfielder Tanisha Milca led the inning off with a single down the leftfield line. Freshman third baseman Clare Warwick then laid down a bunt for a single, but on the play a late throw was overthrown, allowing Milca to reach third. With runners at the corners, the Rainbow Wahine executed a double steal to score Milca.
In the second, with one out, freshman designated player Gail Matsushima got her first collegiate hit with a gapper to left center for a double. Next batter, junior second baseman Alana Power hit another line shot double over the centerfielder to score Matsushima from second. Milca stepped to the plate at got a hit down the rightfield line, to move Power to third. Then a single to right scored Power from third, to make the score 4-0.
The third featured more offense for the Rainbow Wahine. Junior first baseman Tyleen Tausaga led the inning off with a single to right center. A sacrifice bunt by sophomore centerfielder Kaulana Gould moved Tausaga all the way to third when no one covered third on the bunt. Valana Manuma then hit a single to right that score Tausaga easily from third. Next, senior catcher Kristi Yoshizawa hit a single up the middle, putting runners on first and second. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. An errant throw by the catcher scored Manuma. Yoshizawa eventually scored by Milca's third hit of the night, extending UH's lead to 7-0.
The Rainbow Wahine batted around, sending 12 batters to the plate, and scored seven runs. The offensive barrage was highlighted by a two-run double to left-centerfield by Yoshizawa. In the inning, Hawai`i linked together seven consecutive hits, with no outs.
Longwood was able to get a runner on in every inning but the fifth, but the Rainbow Wahine defense stiffened to not allow any runner to get past second. Yoshizawa helped by gunning down two Lancer runners attempting to steal second.

Hawai`i will play two games on Thursday. First they will battle UCSB in a tape-delayed televised game on KFVE at 5:00 (broadcast will be at 8:00 p.m.), and Detroit Mercy at 7:00 p.m.

UC Santa Barbara 0, Detroit 2
Detroit picked up their first win of the season with a 1-0 defeat of UC Santa Barbara. Pitchers Adrienne Baran and Christin Bienenstein got the combined shut-out. Baran got the win, throwing 5.1 innings, scattering four hits, walking six, and striking out two. Bienenstein earned the save, throwing 1.2 innings giving up only one hit and striking out one Gaucho.
The Titans scored a single run in the bottom of the second inning. Katrina Klemp led the inning off with a walk. Klemp stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kaleigh Rafter. That put Klemp in perfect position for Linday Roy, who hit a single to center to drive in the first run of the tournament.
The Titans added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth when the combination of Klemp and Roy struck again. Roy picked up her second RBI of the game when she drove in Klemp from second.
In the top of the sixth, with one out, UCSB loaded the bases. The Titans' Chris Bienenstein entered the game in relief of starter Adriene Baran, and proceeded to squelch the Gaucho rally. She struck out the first batter she faced swinging with a change up. Bienenstein got the final out on a fly ball to centerfield.
For UCSB, Ginger Gutierrez threw 6.0 innings in a complete game effort. She gave up the two runs on six hits with a walk and a strike out.

UC Santa Barbara 1, Penn State 2
Down one run in the bottom of the seventh, Penn State battled back, scoring two runs to defeat the Gauchos. Jenn Reynolds led the inning off with a single to right. Two batters later, Danielle Kinley hit a single up the middle to move Reynolds into scoring position. With two runners on, Jen Williams came up clutch with another single up the middle to drive in the tying run. The Nittany Lions had runners on first and second for Meghan Wolfer who executed a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position for Jen Acunto. Acunto hit a looping flare over UCSB second baseman, Christine Ramos. But as Ramos scurried back to catch it for the third out, she ran into the first base umpire who was unable to get out of the way. The ball fell in for a game-winning hit that scored Kinley from third.
UCSB scored its run in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Jackie Conlin had an infield single to the shortstop, then she moved to second on a passed ball. The Gauchos' lead off hitter, Ramos, then hit a single down the first base line that allowed Conlin to score.
Penn State's Ashley Esparza got a complete game win, throwing 7.0 innings, giving up one run, on only three hits, with two walks, and six strike outs.
Jennifer Davis took the loss for UCSB, throwing a complete game of 6.2 innings, giving up the two runs on seven hits, two walks and three strike outs.

Detroit 0, Penn State 10 (5 innings)
Penn State scored early and often, flexing its offensive power. Five runs crossed the plate in the first, with three scoring in the second, and one in both the third and fourth innings. PSU's Missy Beseres threw a three-hit, complete game, walking three and striking out eight.
Jen Williams led the Nittany Lions goint 2-3 with a triple and one run scored. Danielle Kinley was 2-4 with a run and an RBI. Leigh Murray was 2-3 with a double, a run, and an RBI. Destinie Chavez was 2-2 with two RBI and double. And Shana Madura had a pinch hit home run.

UNLV 9, Longwood 3
UNLV got on the board first, scoring two runs in the top of the second. Fearn hit a home run over the leftfield fence for the initial run. Later, McDonald scored on a double to the left-centerfield gap by Hillyer.
In the third, the Rebels sent nine batters to the plate, and scored four runs. The big blow was Fearn's second home run of the game, as well as back-to-back doubles by Paus and McDonald. Longwood then responded by scoring three in the bottom of the third. UNLV extended their lead by scoring four runs in the top of the third. E. Radford reached safely on a fielding error by the third baseman. The next batter K. Bonnor hit a single to the leftside to bring up C. Hooe, who then hit a high fly over the leftfield fence, to cut the lead to 6-3 in favor of UNLV. But that was all the Longwood offense was able to score, although they had opportunies in the sixth and the seventh, but left five runners stranded combined.
UNLV's Griego got the win, throwing 3.0 innings, giving up three runs on five hits, while walking none and striking out one.
