15-Straight For UH, Close At Home With A Crucial Four-Match MPSF Homestand

Box Score

PALO ALTO, Calif. - No. 5 Hawai`i made it 15 straight victories with a win over Stanford tonight 30-16, 30-24, 30-22 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Burnham Pavilion.

The Warriors improved to 19-4 overall and 15-3 in the MPSF, while Stanford dropped to 4-20 and 2-16.

Lauri Hakala led the way for UH with a team-high 11 kills, while Stanford's Ben Reddy led all attackers with 14.

UH came out on fire in Game 1 jumping out to leads of 5-1, 9-2, and 21-11 before closing out the first game on a 9-5 run.

Head coach Mike Wilton, who picked up his career 600th victory, used a lot of his bench the rest of the way. Senior outside hitter Matt Bender got significant playing time as he is easing his way back to 100 percent after missing the majority of the season with an akle injury. Bender posted eight kills and hit .375.

Senior outside hitter Matt Carere was almost perfect tonight slamming down nine kills in 10 attempts for a .900 hitting percentage.

As a team, Hawai`i could do nothing wrong in Game 1, hitting a blistering .760 (19-0-25) and ended the match at .500.

The Warriors held Stanford to a mere .184 hitting on the night and outblocked the Cardinal 9.0 to 5.0. All 12 Warriors saw some action in tonight's contest.

Hawai`i returns home next week for its final four-match regular season homestand hosting UC San Diego for a pair of MPSF matches and then closing out the regular season with No. 2 Brigham Young April 14-15.
