Softball Closes Road Trip With 14-0 Win Over Grambling State

Box Score

Grambling, La. - The Rainbow Wahine (19-13, 3-0 WAC) closed out its second roadtrip with a 14-0 win over Grambling State. Courtney Baughman combined with Kate Robinson for the three hit shut-out. Tyleen Tausaga led UH by going 2-4--her two hits being a double and a three-run home run at the Grambling State Lady Tiger Field in Grambling, La.

Hawai`i was held to only one run through three innings, but then exploded for six runs in the fourth and seven runs in the final, fifth inning.

In the second Hawai`i scored their first run. Tausaga reached first when the leftfielder dropped her fly ball. She moved to second on a come-backer to the pitcher, and scored on a Kaulana Gould single to left.

The fourth inning started with Audrey Andrade drawing a walk. Gould moved her to second on a single to the shortstop. Malamaisaua Manuma then hit another infield single to load the bases. Two batters later, Richie Anne Titcomb ripped a triple to the leftfield corner, scoring Andrade, Gould, and Manuma. Valana Manuma then hit a single to left to score Titcomb from third. Manuma stole second and third and then scored on a single by Brandi Peiler. A wild pitch moved Peiler into scoring position for Tausaga who proceeded to hit a double to the left-centerfield gap to score Peiler from second, making the score 7-0 in favor of UH.

In the fifth, Malamaisaua Manuma walked to start the inning. After two quick outs, Valana Manuma drove her sister home with a double to left. Next, Warwick hit a single to left to score Valana from second. Peiler then singled to left to put runners on first and second. Tausaga, who after being heckled by a small, but raucous crowd, then hit a bomb high-over the right-centerfield fence for a three run home run. Then, for the second time this roadtrip UH had back-to-back home runs because Andrade followed with a home run of her own that was hit high and hard to dead centerfield. After a third pitching change, Gould hit a double to leftcenter and soon scored on a single by Malamaisaua Manuma that ended the bombardment of hits by Hawai`i.

Baughman threw 4.0 innings and scattered three hits, walked none, and struck out seven. Robinson came in relief to throw the final inning. She struck out two of the three batters she faced.

In the two games today, UH amassed 29 runs on 40 hits with 38 RBI. The pitchers threw 10 shut-out innings, facing only 24 batters, with no walks and 16 strike outs.

The Rainbow Wahine return home to face San Jose State this weekend in the team's first WAC home series. Friday's game starts at 6:00 p.m. with a double header slated for Saturday starting at 2:00 p.m.
