RUSTON, La. - Hawai`i (16-13, 2-0 WAC) pounded 18 hits en route to a 14-4 win over Louisiana Tech (7-16, 0-2) at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.
Brandi Peiler went 3-4, scored two runs, and hit a two-run home run to lead UH. Pitcher
Courtney Baughman (5-3) got the win in relief, throwing 4.0 strong innings, giving up only one run on three hits with one walk one and three strike outs.
Hawaii brought 14 batters up to the plate to start the game, scoring nine runs on 10 hits. Valana Manuma led the game off with a single up the middle. Two batters later, Brandi Peiler smacked another single up the middle, moving Manuma to second. Tyleen Tausaga then had a single to left to load the bases. Tanisha Milca then followed with another single up the middle to score Manuma from third, keeping the bases loaded. Kaulana Gould stepped up and hit a two-run single to left, scoring Peiler and Tausaga. On the throw home, Gould moved to second and Milca went to third. Kristi Yoshizawa then hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Milca from third. Audrey Andrade kept the rally going with a single to right, driving in Gould from third. Richie-Anne Titcomb then drew a walk to place runners at first and second for Manuma who got her second hit of the inning, and sixth straight hit, to drive in Andrade from second. On the play, both Titcomb and Manuma moved into scoring position on the throw home. Next, Clare Warwick got in on the action, getting her first single of the day to drive in both Titcomb and Manuma. With Warwick on second, Peiler then got another single, this time to right field. Warwick went to third, but a throwing error by the rightfielder allowed her to score easily. At the end of one-half inning, the score was Hawaii up 9-0.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Lady Techsters fought back, getting two runs off a Regan Clark home run over the leftfield wall, cutting the Hawai`i lead to 9-2.
UH got one run back in the top of the second. Gould led the inning off with a single past a diving shortstop. She stole second, then moved to third on a single to right by Yoshizawa. Titcomb then picked up her first RBI of the season with a ground out to the shortstop whose only play was to first.
In the bottom of the second, starting pitcher Paula Blanning gave up a lead off home run to Ashley Cameron, that made the score 10-3 in favor of UH. Baughman then entered the game and ended up being the pitcher of record.
The Rainbow Wahine continued to hit in the third. Warwick led off with a double to right, then was followed by the Peiler home run that extended the Hawai`i lead to 12-3.
Louisiana Tech added another run in the bottom of the fourth when Emma Barnes hit a run scoring double that drove in Sandy Carroll who had reached on a walk. The score after four complete innings had UH up 12-4.
Then Hawai`i tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth. A passed ball allowed Tausaga to score from third. Then Yoshizawa picked up her 16th RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly to right that scored Milca, making the final score 14-4.
Hawai`i plays Louisiana Tech in the final game of the three game series at 2:00 p.m. and will end the road trip with a double header against Grambling State on Monday.
