HILO, Hawai`i - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (20-8) had a huge offensive explosion over the UH-Hilo Vulcans (9-18) 13-5 at Francis Wong Stadium Wednesday.
Mark Rodrigues (3-1) went 6.0 innings, allowing just one run and two hits in 6.0 innings pitched. Ryan Olszewski (2-4) got the loss for the Vulcans.
Justin Frash had a huge game, going 5-for-6 with four RBI, a double and two runs. Luis Avila added a 2-for-5 game with a home run, two RBI and two runs. Matthew Inouye went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI while Robbie Wilder went 1-for-3 with three runs.
Elijah Christensen again started the scoring in the game, driving in Inouye in the second inning, making it 1-0 in favor of the Rainbows. UH-Hilo then took advantage of an error by Hawai`i in the bottom of the second, scoring an unearned run to tie the score at 1-1.
Frash put the `Bows back ahead in the third on a RBI-single to right field, scoring Wilder. UH looked to extend their lead, but Derek DuPree was thrown out at the plate after an attempted sacrifice fly, completing the Vulcans third double play in as many innings.
Hawai`i finally had their breakout inning in the top of the fifth. Frash started it off with a RBI-single, bringing in Wilder to make it 3-1. Avila then came up with the big blast, hitting a two-run home run to straight-away centerfield, making the score 5-1.
The Rainbows then busted it open in the sixth inning, scoring seven runs, highlighted by a three-run double by Kris Sanchez, pushing UH's advantage to 12-1. Frash continued his hot hitting in the seventh, whacking a RBI-double on his fifth hit of the game to make the score 13-1. The Vulcans didn't give up their fight, scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth to make the final score 13-5.
Hawai`i will now take a few days off before hosting the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Sunday, March 26, at 1:05 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium.
