Rainbows Get Another Road Win At UH-Hilo 5-2

HILO, Hawai`i - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (19-8) defeated the UH-Hilo Vulcans (9-17) 5-2 in front of a crowd of 837 at Francis Wong Stadium Tuesday. Justin Costi (3-0) picked up the win for the 'Bows while Ryan Hanohano (0-7) took the loss for the Vulcans. Matthew Daly came on in relief, pitching 2.1 hitless innings with five strikeouts to record his first save of the year.

Luis Avila led the way, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI. Adam Roberts added a 2-for-4 game with two doubles, a run and one RBI while Justin Frash went 2-for-5 with a run. Esteban Lopez also went 2-for-5 with a double and run while Elijah Christensen had a 1-for-2 game with one RBI.

Christensen got the Rainbows on the board in the top of the second, hitting a RBI-single, scoring Franco to make it 1-0. UHH's A.J. Satele got the first hit of the game for the Vulcans, a double to deep centerfield, before scoring in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1.

Hawai`i responded in the top of the fourth, as Roberts and Joseph Spiers drove in runs, making it 3-1 in favor of the `Bows. The Vulcans then cut their deficit back to 3-2 in the sixth, only to see Avila hit is second double of the game, scoring Frash to push the Rainbow advantage back to two runs.

Robbie Wilder added an insurance run for Hawai`i in the top of the eighth. And that was more than enough for the Rainbow bullpen of Richard Olsen and Daly, who combined for 3.1 scoreless innings with just one hit and seven strikeouts.

The two teams will play again tomorrow at Wong Stadium at 2 p.m.
