HONOLULU - No. 3 ranked Hawai`i struggled out of the gate early but regrouped en route to a four-set victory over No. 10 Loyola-Chicago 32-34, 30-21, 30-25, 30-24 tonight in front of 3,674 at the Stan Sheriff Center in a non-conference volleyball match.
Hawai`i pushed its record to 14-4, winners of their last 10 in a row, while Loyola-Chicago dropped to 16-5, losing four of their last five.
A marathon first game saw six lead changes and 24 ties as the two teams seesawed the entire match before the Ramblers came out victorious, 34-32.
In Game 2, UH jumped out to an 8-4 lead and never looked back, increasing it to as many as nine, winning 30-21.
LUC went out quickly in Game 3, leading 5-3. The Warrior tied it at seven and again at 10, before taking the lead for good at 12-11. UH increased the margin to five at 25-20 and kept the spread to win 30-25.
Hawai`i got a kill by Lauri Hakala in Game 4 to lead 1-0. LUC's Joe Guntli tied it at one, before LUC's Chris Kozlarek had an attack error, and UH would not relinquish the lead again going on to finish off the match, 30-24.
Outside hitter Jose Delgado led all hitters with 19 kills followed by Matt Carere's 15, while Hakala and Maulia La Barre each recorded 13. Setter Brian Beckwith handed out 61 assists, while libero Alfred Reft picked up a match-high 17 digs.
Loyola-Chicago was led by James Grunst and Kozlarek's 13 kills, while Chris Nelson added 10. Setter Brian Guntli dished out 51 assists and Kozlarek added 15 digs.
The two teams finish off the two-match non-conference series Saturday night at the SSC at 7:05 p.m. first serve. The match is preceeded by an all-Alumni match at 4:00 p.m.
