Courtney Baughman held off UNLV to pick up her fourth win and shortstop
Valana Manuma went 4-4 to help lead the Rainbow Wahine to a 5-4 victory over the Rebels on the final day of the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Both teams scored quickly. In the top of the first, UNLV posted a run first. Brittany Freight started the game off with a bang, hitting a double to left-centerfield. She moved to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a sacrifice fly to leftfield by Maggie Liveri.
Hawai`i, not to be out done, answered immediately, scoring a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, third baseman Clare Warwick hit a single off the UNLV third baseman. Leftfielder Brandi Peiler then pushed her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Manuma stepped to the plate with two outs and promptly smacked a double down the leftfield line to score Warwick easily from third, tying the score at 1-1.
The Rainbow Wahine added a run in the third when Warwick, who had reached on a fielder's choice, scored on another fielder's choice hit by centerfielder Kaulana Gould.
In the fifth, UH added three insurance runs. Peiler started things by leading off the inning with a single to right. Manuma followed with a single to left, moving Peiler to second. Gould came up next and hit a single to center to load the bases. Designated player Gail Matsushima was hit by a pitch to force a run home, and still leave the bases loaded. Catcher Kristi Yoshizawa then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Peiler from third. Then, first baseman Kate Robinson hit a single up the middle to score Gould to extend their lead to 3-0.
But UNLV came roaring back, scoring three runs of their own in the top of the sixth. Bri Bernardi led the inning off with a single up the middle. Maggie Liveri then hit a double to leftcenter to put runners at second and third. Two batters later, Kendall Fearn hit an RBI single to left to score Bernardi from third. Caitlyn Paus then hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Liveri. Pinch hitter Sandy Nakamura then whacked a double down the leftfield line to score Fearn from first. But on the play, Nakamura was picked off by Yoshizawa at second when she took an aggressive turn at second to end the rally with UNLV trailing, 5-4.
Baughman battled back in the top of the seventh and retired the side in order to secure the win. She threw a complete game, 7.0 innings and gave up four runs on six hits with two walks and three strike outs. It was her second win in the tournament.
For UNLV, it was a combined effort, with Christie Robinson taking the loss, throwing 4.0 innings, yielding four runs on eight UH hits with one walk and two strike outs.
The Rainbow Wahine now head into the Bank of Hawaii Invitational which runs from March 16-19. Teams participating in the tourney are Kansas, Oklahoma State, Northwestern, San Diego State, and Longwood.

Santa Barbara 2, Longwood 1 (8 Innings)
Santa Barbara scored in the first and last inning to get a win over Longwood. In the first inning, UCSB had their first six batters reach safely. But the Lancer defense was able to thwart the rally by making plays to cut down the lead runner. The Gauchos were able to score their first run when Tiffany Wright hit a single to drive in Jessica Hejna from second.
Longwood got the run back in the bottom of the second. After striking out the first two batters of the inning, UCSB's pitcher Jennifer Davis gave up a single to the shortstop by Mallory Gordon. Gordon then stole second to position herself in scoring position. The next batter, Emily Radford smacked a single to left to score Gordon from second.
In the top of the eighth, with the International Tie-Breaker in effect, the Gauchos' Shelby Hensler was placed at second base. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jackie Conlin, and then scored on a ground ball to the right side by Christine Ramos. That put them in the lead 2-1.
With their runner at second, Longwood moved Emily Radford over to third on a sacrifice bunt. But, they were unable to push her across the plate to tie the game.
Both pitchers threw complete games. For UCSB, Davis threw 8.0 innings giving up one run on five hits with no walks and 13 strike outs. Longwood's Rachel Mills also threw 8.0 innings, giving up two runs on five hits with one walk and one strike out.

Longwood's Rachel Mills picked up their first win of the tournament, shutting out Detroit, 4-0. After throwing the entire first, eight inning game, Mills threw 7.0 complete innings, giving up no runs on three hits and striking out one. Caitlin Hooe had a big day, going 3-4 with a double and a home run.
Pepper Wilson led the Lancers off with a single to left. A sacrifice bunt by Victoria Masters pushed Wilson to second. Two batters later, Kristina Garrison walked, placing two runners on base. Three batters later, Kori Bonner drove in Wilson with a single, and moved Garrison to third. Next, Hooe came up and hit a single to left to score Garrison. That put the Lancers up 2-0.
In the fifth, Hooe struck again, hitting a home run over the rightfield fence, pushing their lead to 3-0.
Hooe led the top of the seventh off with a double to left center. Danielle Skapura followed with a single to right, moving Hooe to third. Ryan Washington then hit a deep, foul, fly ball for a sacrifice fly to score Hooe for Longwood's fourth and final run.
The Titans' Adrienne Baran threw the complete game, giving up four runs on 11 hits with a pair of walks and strike outs.
