Blanning Strikes Out 14, Hawai`i Shuts Out Detroit, 4-0

Box Score

HONOLULU - Senior pitcher Paula Blanning struck out a career-high 14 batters en route to a 4-0 victory over Detroit (1-4) in day two of the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament. Blanning had her pitches working early, striking out nine out of first 12 batters in the game. Hawai`i's offense came alive early, scoring a pair of runs in the first and second innings. That was all Blanning needed for the win.

In the bottom of the first, freshman centerfielder Tanisha Milca drew a walk to lead the inning off. The next batter, freshman third baseman Clare Warwick hit a home run deep over the left field fence. The two-run shot was her third home run of the year.

In the second, it was junior Alana Power who drew a walk with one out. Milca then hit a sharp double to the left-centerfield gap, placing both runners into scoring position. Warwick then smacked a double right off the line on the leftfield fence to drive in both Power and Milca. Warwick accounted for all four runs in the game.

Detroit's Brittney Hire then came in relief of Adrienne Baran after 1.1 innings pitched. Hire held Hawai`i at bay for the rest of the game, giving up no runs while scattering two hits, walking one and striking out two.

Blanning threw a complete game shut-out. She spaced four hits and walked only one. Blanning ended the game one strike out short of tying Hawai`i's single-game record of 15 strike outs held by All-America Brooke Wilkins. Wilkins struck out 15 batters twice, the first was against UC Santa Barbara (3/1/94) and the second was against Long Beach State (3/22/94).
