Rainbows Drop Series-Finale To San Diego State, 7-5

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (3-1) fell to the San Diego State Aztecs (1-3) 7-5 in front of a crowd of 2,370 at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday. Dean Turner took the loss for Hawai`i while Mike Koons got the win for SDSU.

Luis Avila had another good day, going 1-for-5 with three RBI and a double. Derek DuPree was the only Rainbow with a multiple-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a run.

Hawai`i got on the board in the bottom of the first as Avila drove in a run on a fielder's choice. The Aztecs took the lead in the third on a three-run home run by Paul Smyth. San Diego State looked in complete control, scoring two more in the fifth to push their advantage to 5-1.

But the 'Bows didn't give up. Avila hit a ground-rule double that scored two to highlight a three-run fifth before Elijah Christensen scored in the sixth, tying the score at five.

But San Diego State refused to let it get away, scoring runs in the seventh and eighth innings, taking the game 7-5.

The Rainbows will get back on the diamond on Friday, Feb. 10, against UC Irvine at the Les Murakami Stadium, in a series running from Feb. 10-12. The games on Friday and Saturday will start at 6:35 p.m. with the Sunday game starting at 1:05 p.m.
