LOS ANGELES, Calif. - No. 4 Hawai`i completed its four-match sweep on the West Coast with a straight-set victory tonight at No. 14 USC, 30-28, 30-20, 30-21, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the North Gym.
It was the second straight night Hawai`i knocked off USC in front of 400 fans after winning the first two matches of the trip at Cal State Northridge over the weekend.
The Warriors improved to 11-4 on the season and 9-3 in MPSF action, while USC fell to 8-11 and 5-9.
Despite hitting .208 in Game 1, Hawai`i managed to hold the Trojans to a mere .054 hitting percentage and win, 30-28. Lauri Hakala was the high man for UH in the first game registering five kills. The entire game seesawed until the end when a Hawai`i triple block and a USC hitting error proved to be the difference.
UH pulled away early in the second game 4-1 and 10-6 while hitting a scorching .467 with 4.5 blocks en route to a decisive 30-20 win.
In the third game, USC fought back from a 22-17 deficit with five unanswered points and eventually pulled ahead 25-24. UH rattled off three of the next four points to lead 28-26, but USC came back to knot it up at 29. The final two points for UH came on consecutive kills by Hakala and Jose Delgado to end the match, 31-29.
Hakala led the Warriors with 16 kills followed by 11 from Matt Carere and Delgado added 10.
UH outhit USC .333 to .119 while outblocking the Trojans 14.5 to 5.5.
The Warriors have the rest of this week off before opening a four match home stand against UCLA March 10-11 and Loyola-Chicago March 17-18 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
