LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Fourth-ranked Hawai`i defeated No. 14 USC tonight 30-18, 30-26, 27-30, 30-24 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Lyon Center.
The Rainbow Warriors win their sixth straight match improving to 10-4 overall and 8-3 in the MPSF. USC falls to 8-10 and 5-8.
Matt Carere's eight kills led the way for the Warriors in Game 1. Tied at one, UH then went on a 9-3 run and never looked back as Hawai`i hit .548, winning 30-18.
UH had to come from behind in Game 2. USC held the lead until UH tied it at 21 on a double block by Brian Beckwith and Dio Dante. The two teams teetered until UH broke a 25 all tie on a kill by Carere. The Warriors went on to close out the game, 30-26.
In Game 3, USC broke away 16-15 on an attack error by Jose Delgado as part of a 9-4 run and eventually winning, 30-27.
With Game 4 tied at 23, the Warriors rattled off six unanswered points to go on and finish off the match with a 30-24 win.
Hawai`i was led by Delgado's 20 kills. Carere pumped in 18 kills, while Lauri Hakala added 14.
UH outhit (.352 to .221) and outblocked the Trojans (18.5 to 11.5).
For USC, Juan Figueroa had 20 kills, Joao Grangeiro added 12 kills and 10 digs, and Jimmy Killian had 6 blocks.
The Warriors complete its four-match road trip Tuesday at USC with the match slated for the North Gym at 5 p.m. HST.
