Morton Holds Off Southern Mississippi, 2-1

HONOLULU - In the nightcap on day two of the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Classic, sophomore pitcher Jessica Morton pitched a complete game victory over Southern Mississippi, 2-1. Morton held USM scoreless for the first five innings, scattering five hits, walking two, and striking out eight Golden Eagle batters through seven. It was her first victory on the season.

In the second inning it was a pair of freshmen who combined on scoring the first run. Rightfielder Audrey Andrade drew a walk with one out in the second inning. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and then was driven home by a single up the middle hit by centerfielder Tanisha Milca. Later, in the fifth inning, senior catcher Kristi Yoshizawa started things off with a single to left field with one out. She moved to second when freshman third baseman Clare Warwick followed with a single in the hole at short. Two batters later, sophomore leftfielder Kaulana Gould ripped a line shot single up the middle driving home Yoshizawa to make the score 2-0.

The Golden Eagles answered in the sixth, catcher Kristin Pilgrim led the inning off with a single. Courtney Kelly came in to pinch run and moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball. With two outs, Ashley Brenan came through with a single to left field to score Kelly. USM's Lacey Gros pitched the complete game, giving up two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out five.

Hawai`i will battle Texas State (3-1) at 2:00 p.m. and Loyola Marymount at 4:00 p.m. in tomorrow's games.
