HONOLULU - UC Irvine's Jayson Jablonsky posted 16 kills and Matt Weber added 15 leading the No. 4 Anteaters to a straight-set win in Hawai`i's home opener of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action tonight in front of 3,258 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The No. 7 ranked Warriors (3-3, 1-2 MPSF) struggled throughout the match passing the tough UCI serves. UCI aced UH five times and Warrior setter Brian Beckwith was constantly chasing down errant passes to start the offense.
Hawai`i took a 6-5 lead in Game 1; however, a kill by UCI's Aaron Harrell tied it at six, which proved to be the last lead of the match for UH.
In Game 2, UCI jumped out to leads of 10-6 and 18-10. Game 3 was much the same as the Anteaters led 9-6 and 15-11 early. But Hawai`i came storming back to tie it at 20 before UCI called a timeout and regrouped to pull ahead 26-22 and kept the four-point margin to close out the match.
UCI outhit (.373 to .288) and outblocked (8.0 to 4.5) UH as the Anteaters won decisively in three 30-26, 30-23, 30-26.
UH's Matt Carere was the only bright spot offensively as he had a team-high 12 kills while hitting a respectable .435.
The two teams complete the two-game MPSF series on Friday night, Jan. 27, at 7:05 p.m.
