HONOLULU - The seventh-ranked University of Hawai`i Warrior volleyball lost an epic five-game match tonight to No. 5 UCLA in front of 4,451 fans at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Despite the loss, UH captured its fifth Outrigger title by winning the tie-breaker as the Warriors, UCLA, and Ohio State finished with identical 2-1 records. But Hawai`i edged the Bruins and Buckeyes by the tie-breaker taking total games won and dividing it by total games played. UH had a percentage of .727 to UCLA and Ohio State's .545. The Buckeyes finished in second place taking the head-to-head with the Bruins, while Penn State was fourth with an 0-3 mark.
The Bruins (4-3) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after taking the first two games by 30-26. However, UH (3-2) roared back in games three (30-25) and four (30-27) sparked by the energetic play of Eric Kalima and Jacob Schkud. Both came off the bench and contributed 10 and eight kills, respectively, with Kalima hitting .429 and Schkud. 500.
Game 5 was a classic UH-UCLA battle as the Warrior jumped out to a 4-0 lead only to see the Bruins claw back in and tie it at six. The lead teetered four times as UH served for the match at 14-13, but UCLA's Dennis Gonzalez's dump shot knotted it up at 14. A Sean O'Malley kill and an attack error by UH's Hakala closed it out 16-14 Bruins.
