No. 7 Warriors Regroup, Knock Off No. 8 UCSB In Four

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. - Outside hitter Lauri Hakala and Matt Carere slammed 46 kills between them leading No. 7 Hawai`i to a four-game victory at No. 8 UC Santa Barbara 36-34, 28-30, 30-28, and 30-21 tonight at Robertson Gymnasium.

Junior Hakala, who led the 'Bows last night with 15 kills, posted 23 tonight in 39 swings for a .538 average. Teammate Carere, who hit .000 last night, was a force tonight with 23 kills and hit .514.

The Warriors (1-1, 1-1 MPSF) were on fire offensively hitting a whopping .524 hitting percentage collectively.

Individually, all six UH hitters posted .500 or better hitting percentages.

Also having solid offensive performances were Eric Kalima with 11 kills, while Kyle Klinger and Dio Dante were very effective as each hit .500 in 16 swings apiece.

Setter Brian Beckwith ran the offense almost flawlessly dishing out 64 assists, while contributing three blocks, four kills, and seven digs.

UH outblocked UCSB 13.5 to seven as Dante picked up a match-high six blocks and Carere added five.

UCSB (2-3, 1-1 MPSF) was led by Evan Patak's 25 kills as the Gauchos hit .329 on the night.

Hawai`i returns home to host the 12th Outrigger Invitational next week. Ohio State, UCLA, and Penn State make up the field which runs Jan. 18-20 at the Stan Sheriff Center. Matches begin at 4 p.m. and UH is in the feature match each night at 7 p.m.
